Why do people say that poker players are looser online?

PW asked:

Live you can get someone all-in for at least 50% of your good hands. Online, at the same level, the people seem to sort of have brains usually. So why do you commonly read or hear that online players play more loosely?

typically the online player is more loose of a player, but they are more known for being much more aggressive than the live player. so while an online player might be considered more loose aggressive than a live player, it doesn’t necessarily mean they will be paying off 50% of your good hands.

I think it is the flood of people playing at low levels online that makes that statement ring true. At higher dollar tables and tournaments, you don’t see it as much. Usually the only time you can find a brick and mortar tournament with a $10 buyin is when you host it in your living room. The majority of online poker is played at a lower level than you’ll find in any casino.

I think they are usually talking about lower limit games and ring games where there is a lot of calling down to the river with any two cards.

I think most online players only play fake money or small change (like 5cent/10cent) games. At those tables, people play retarded poker and go all-in all the time, so to them, it appears everyone is playing loose. And since people tend to go all-in more often, they’re also the ones complaining all the time that people hit their long shots more often online than in live games (which I believe is just sour grapes by mostly bad players). At any higher level real money tables (even $1.10 sit-in-gos) people usually play pretty tight.

    good question

but just a theory; its so different having chips you can physically touch, and virtual chips that are merely bytes (but represent real money)

regarding your “brains” comment, and i’m again using a loose theory; computer players should be computer saavy and thus reasonably intelligent, as oppose to the old-timers and lively players at the live tables

but obviously, a computer-based player will have alot to learn when he or she plays at a real live game
